Like Jim said, boots first, skis later. Boots are the most important part of your set up and you need to be comfortable in them. It’s definitely worth the extra money to buy your boots at a shop and have a trained fitter help you get the right boot. A $1000 set of boots that you pay $300 for online aren’t going to be nearly as good for you as a $200 pair that fits right. If you’re close to a good shop, right now is the time to buy since they’re going to be clearing out last years models. As for the skis themselves, I’ve found ebay to have some really good deals, but you have to be patient. If you’re not sure what type of ski you want yet, i suggest waiting until the season starts and demoing some skis once you have your new boots. This way you can try out a bunch of different makes and models to get the best idea of what you want.
