In today's market you can find the best ski gear online if you don't already have a favorite ski shop or ski rep. Ebay will have some great ones, or if you search for a particular ski online you usually will find tons of dealers who all compete on price.
What you will be missing is the personal help and assistance in buying, which if you know something about skis you can probably do online including picking the size and type. If not, some sites may have a chat feature or if you have a friend who is willing to help you you can be set.
The best scenario… next time you go skiing just go into the shop and do a day's rental. The rental shop expert will fit you and help you find the best skis and then you can test them out on the mountain for the day. Sometimes you can even find free demo's. If you love them… GREAT.. you now know what to search for online. If you don't or even if you do like them you can still choose to demo another pair the next day. Then you can compare and make sure you have ones you like.
This is still better than running to a ski shop in NJ and buying anything without a demo. And you can use the knowledge to search for exactly what you want online. You can usually find last years version of the same ski you demo, and since we are past the holidays you can probably find that same ski online for a deal shortly if not today.
Good luck! Hope this helps. Happy skiing and if you get a chance switch to Telemark. cool

Pelican or ski barn. But really if you can wait until the end of the season to get what you need then you can get some great sales. It's hard to get good stuff in the middle of winter that isn't expensive. (but in May you could get brand new skiis, boots, poles and bindings for under $200).
Otherwise, ebay is always great!!
